Best Practices for Facebook and Instagram

By Andrew Hutchinson, Social Media Today

Facebook has launched a new best practices guide for both Facebook and Instagram, which covers all the key basics of each platform, and includes some interesting notes, particularly in the wider context of the company’s more recent shifts.

“Your fans and followers are more likely to engage with a post that feels personal.”
Some of those notes of interest include:

  • All about community – Facebook says that Pages should look to build a personal connection: “Your fans and followers are more likely to engage with a post that feels personal rather than something that’s over-produced or obviously not created by you”
  • Maximizing Stories – Facebook notes that stories can now be posted to both Instagram and Facebook at the same time, which can help to maximize coverage and engagement. Do take note, however, that not all functionalities are available on each Stories version. Your ‘Swipe up for more’ links on Instagram, for example, won’t translate to FB
  • Use targeted hashtags on Instagram – Facebook says that more than 150 million people visit the Instagram Explore tab every day, and including the right hashtags can increase the likelihood that your content will surface here. There’s no mention of hashtags on Facebook.
